Epiphyseal plate of a long bone is where the hyaline cartilage is positioned. It is found in the end of a long bone which is responsible for increasing the boneβs length during the period of development, it is also called as the growth plate. In turn, individuals that experience problems or certain disorders regarding the growth plate can have adverse effects to oneβs development and result to dwarfism.
The epiphysis of long bones is covered with articular cartilage which functions to reduce joint friction and absorb shock. During growth, the epiphyseal plate is also made of cartilage until it is replaced by bone when growth ceases in adulthood. ;
The area of a long bone covered with cartilage is called the epiphyseal plate, which is essential for bone growth. This plate remains active until the end of puberty, when it becomes ossified, stopping further lengthening of the bone. Proper functioning of the epiphyseal plate is vital for healthy skeletal development.
