Sieving is a technique used to separate particles of different sizes. In this method, a sieve (a tool made of a fine mesh or net) is used. The mixture is poured onto the sieve, and the finer particles pass through the tiny holes of the mesh, while the larger particles remain on top. In the case of sand and gravel, sand particles are smaller and pass through the sieve, leaving the gravel behind.
