Two families went for a family picnic with ten (10) of their children. Children with only distinct names from both families were allowed to enter the boat for sight-seeing. Four (4) children from the first family went for the first trip and three (3) children from the second family went for the second trip. How many distinct names do the two families have?

Answer (2)

The two families have a total of 7 distinct names when combining the 4 distinct names from the first family and the 3 distinct names from the second family. No names overlap between the families. Thus, the total is simply the sum of the distinct names from each family.
