For each quadratic relationship, find the coordinates of the:
i. x-intercepts
ii. y-intercept
a. y = x^2 − 2

Answer (2)

The x-intercepts of the function y = x 2 − 2 are at the points ( 2  , 0 ) and ( − 2  , 0 ) , while the y-intercept is at the point ( 0 , − 2 ) .

x intercept occurs when y = 0 ...put in y = 0 and find x
0 = x^2 -2
x^2 = 2
x = ± sqrt 2
so there are TWO x axis intercepts ( + sqrt 2, 0) and (-sqrt2 , 0)

y axis intercept occurs when x = 0 put in x = 0 and compute y
y = (0)^2 -2 y = -2 **so the y-axis intercept is then (0,-2) ** ;
