Humus forms quickly in rainforests due to high rainfall and warm temperatures that promote rapid decomposition of organic material. The constant supply of decomposing leaves and plant debris, combined with the dense vegetation structure, contributes to a rich layer of humus. However, when forests are cleared, this fertility diminishes quickly as nutrients are leached away from the soil.
