A food chain is the passing of energy from one type of organism to another.
For example: Grass ----- Rabbit ----- Hawk
A food web is a combination of food chains that overlap.

Food chain is a single line of animals that consume one another and a food web is the interconnections of animals that consume one another. The picture to the left is a food chain, the one to the right is a food web.

A food chain is a simple linear path showing how energy moves from one organism to another, while a food web illustrates the interconnected relationships among various organisms in an ecosystem. Food chains can be limiting as they oversimplify feeding relationships, whereas food webs capture the complexity of energy flow. Understanding both concepts is important for studying ecology.
