A muscle cell undergoes glycolysis to generate pyruvate. Considering that the cell remains under aerobic conditions and moves on to the ETC via the Krebs cycle, which of the following would be the final electron acceptor in this case?

A. Hydrogen
B. Nitrate
C. Oxygen

Oxygen would be the terminal election acceptor. This is not the case for anaerobic metabolism however- depending on the species your examining there are several terminal electron acceptors ranging from sulphur to NADP.

In aerobic respiration, oxygen is the final electron acceptor in the electron transport chain. It combines with electrons and protons to form water, allowing ATP production to continue. Thus, the correct answer is C. Oxygen.
