The value of salt has shifted from being a precious and traded commodity in ancient Rome, where it was even used as payment for soldiers, to an abundant and inexpensive resource today. This reflects changes in trade, economics, and social conditions over time. Salt remains crucial for health, but its accessibility has greatly increased.
