James Wilkinson bought a 260-acre plot of property on the north bank of the Kentucky River in 1786, and it eventually became the center of Frankfort.
Early on, he advocated for Frankfort to become the **state capital. According to Wilkinson, Frankfort would serve as a hub for transportation using the Kentucky River to transfer agricultural products to the Ohio River, the Mississippi, **and finally New Orleans.
