Ellis Island in New York primarily serviced European immigrants, most of whom were admitted into the country after basic health and background checks. On the other hand, Angel Island in San Francisco was primarily an entry point for Asian immigrants, who faced harsher conditions due to prevalent anti-Asian sentiment. ;

Ellis Island, which opened in 1892, processed mainly European immigrants with a relatively quick and welcoming experience. In contrast, Angel Island opened in 1910 and primarily handled Asian immigrants, who often faced lengthy detentions and rigorous interrogations. The two islands reflect the diverse immigration patterns and the varying experiences of immigrants in the United States.
