The ruler who declared the exclusive worship of Aten was Akhenaten, also known as Amenhotep IV. He initiated this monotheistic practice during the mid-14th century BCE in ancient Egypt, mainly to reduce the power of the Amun priests. His reforms, however, were not lasting, as traditional polytheism was restored soon after his death.
