A typical seigneurie featured a rectangular shape with lots for tenants, known as habitant, who farmed the land. It involved a hierarchical structure where the seigneur held legal and economic rights over the land, while providing protections and services to inhabitants. This system was crucial in shaping the colonial landscape of Canada during the French period.
