The process by which a cell produces and releases proteins involves several steps. Firstly, the information to produce a protein is encoded in the cell's DNA. The cell transcribes this information into messenger RNA (mRNA), which then travels to a ribosome. The ribosome reads the mRNA and assembles amino acids into a protein. If the protein is to be used within the cell, it will be synthesized by a free-floating ribosome. However, if the protein is destined for the lysosome, the plasma membrane, or to be secreted, it is made on a ribosome attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER).
After synthesis, the protein is packaged into a vesicle that moves to the Golgi apparatus where it is modified. The final modified protein exits the Golgi in a vesicle, which either delivers it to its cellular destination or fuses with the plasma membrane to secrete the protein outside the cell, a process known as exocytosis. This entire pathway is essential for the production and release of proteins in a cell.
