Most cells are porous to water and other materials but strong enough to support and protect them.

Cell walls are thicker than cell membranes, and can therefore support the cell well. They keep a strong boundary for the protection of the cell, but can let water and some nutrients through to nourish and power the cell. Hope this helps! :)

Cells are surrounded by a cell membrane for protection and nutrient regulation, and many have an additional structure called a cell wall, especially in plants. The cell wall provides structural support, protects against damage, and helps to regulate water intake. This allows cells, particularly plant cells, to maintain their integrity in various environmental conditions.
