Describe the similarity in the ways tree roots and ice mechanically weather rock.

When water gets into cracks between rocks and freezes, it forces the rocks apart, breaking them. Roots, in a similar fashion make their way between the rocks and grow, forcing the rocks apart.

Tree roots and ice both mechanically weather rock by exerting pressure on existing cracks. Ice does this through the expansion of freezing water, while tree roots grow and push against the rock. Both processes ultimately break down solid rock into smaller pieces.
