In "A Separate Peace", the motif of 'hearing' symbolizes the characters' emotional states and relationships, emphasizing the importance of communication and connection. It also represents the selective deafness to reality that some characters exhibit, particularly regarding the impacts of war. Overall, the motif enriches the narrative by highlighting the inner conflicts and experiences of the characters.
